In the IELTS Speaking test, Part 3 is often considered the most intellectually demanding section. Candidates are required not only to express opinions on abstract topics but also to support their views with reasons, examples, and thoughtful analysis. Unfortunately, many learners struggle to articulate their responses with the clarity and logical progression that examiners expect. This is where the OREO structure can make a significant difference.
Mastering IELTS Speaking Part 3: How the OREO Structure Boosts Coherence and Clarity
OREO—standing for Opinion, Reason, Example, Other Opinion—is a simple yet powerful framework that helps students organise their ideas coherently. Much like the layers of the famous cookie, this technique “sandwiches” a student’s viewpoint between solid justification and illustrative support. The final O develops the response further by stating other people’s opinions and explaining them. This shows you have a broad range of vocabulary and grammar to discuss topics and compare opinions.
Top tip: Remember to finish with a brief summary or paraphrase of the initial opinion!
By following this structure, learners can enhance the cohesion and coherence of their answers, one of the four key IELTS Speaking assessment criteria.
