In IELTS Speaking, you have to show your range of vocabulary. However most students think this means you need to know big long fancy words (that native speakers actually never use!!). The secret is that you need to use ‘idiomatic vocabulary’ – this means phrases and expressions where the meaning isn’t directly derived from the individual words, but rather from their common usage within a language.
In simple terms, this means normal words and phrases that are high level.
One of the most common idiomatic vocabulary is ‘phrasal verbs’. To make a phrasal verb you need a verb + proposition. E.g. Hang out, or wake up.
Here is the scoring criteria for band 9. Notice the word ‘idiomatic’!
